How to do Ariana Grande’s ponytail with clip-in hair extensions

Fancy an A-list look using your clip-in hair extensions this week? We admit it, we’ve got a total girl crush on Ariana Grande. She’s morphed from super cute Nickelodeon child star, to ‘Dangerous Woman’ Instagram queen with over 70 million followers - and we can’t get her songs out of our head! From her love of a good catsuit, to her signature ‘half up, half down’ hair, we love her fearless style.

So we asked our favourite hair guru, Miss Alex, to make one of her expert videos to help you create this sexy Ariana-inspired look. It’d be perfect for a night out on the town with the girls (catsuit and hot dancer boyfriend optional).

So what are you waiting for?

Clip in your ‘half down’ hair extensions

To create this look you need to follow Alex’s advice on clipping your wefts so you apply them in the right places for the look. Don’t worry, we’ll take you through it one step at a time.

First you need to apply your extensions for the ‘half down’ part of your look. Clip the top half layer of your hair up and out of the way and apply your extensions as low down near the nape of your neck as you can. This makes them easier to disguise later. You need to apply a stacked two clip first, then a four clip above, two three clips above that, and two two clips on top of them.

New to clip-in hair extensions and have no idea what on earth we’re about? Check out Alex’s video on how to clip in your hair extensions – it’s really easy when you know how!

Clip your ‘half up’ hair extensions

Now for the ‘half up’ extensions. Take down that top layer of hair and pull it back with your fingers to get an idea of where your Ariana-style high ponytail will be.

You need to clip some wefts in the top section where your ponytail will sit to give it some extra volume.  Part your hair at that ponytail spot into a front and a back section, then clip the front section out of the way. Now apply some one clip wefts to your ponytail spot by flipping them over on themselves so they’re upside down. You might want to watch the video to see how Alex does this step!

Still with us? You’re doing great, that’s the hardest part over.

Backcomb it

This is an optional step but it’s really worth it to give your style some extra oomph.

Let your top section of hair down and take your comb. Now backcomb sections of this hair by pushing against the root around the ponytail area to give it some more volume. Brush gently over the backcomb to smooth it.

Ponytail it

It’s the big ponytail moment. Pull your hair from just above your ears into a high ponytail on top of your head. Make sure you’re leaving enough hair free at the back to cover those lower hair extensions you’ve clipped though!

Comb your ponytail hair so it looks smooth and glossy and tie in place with your hair bobble. Pull the ponytail forwards to tighten it a bit. Cover up the hair tie by taking a strand of hair from your ponytail and wrapping it around the hair tie and securing it in place with a hair grip.

Curl it

Fluff out the tail of your pony and the side sections of your bottom layer of hair with your comb so they’re not too flat. Brush the ‘half down’ section of your hair out and grab your curling wand.

Loosely curl these bottom sections of hair as well as your ponytail. Brush the curls through and give everything a good spritz of hairspray.

Flick it

Boom. You’re so ready for your ‘Break Free’ hair flicking moment!
